Review: ‘Revisiting 1967’s ‘Casino Royale’’

1967 casino royale review

Description

This is possibly the most indulgent film ever made. Anything goes. Consistency and planning must have seemed the merest whimsy. One imagines the directors (there were five, all working independently) waking in the morning and wondering what they'd shoot today. Only Live Twice” (with its elaborate volcanic-crater base), coming in at a then-staggering $12 million. Dassanowsky declared “Casino Royale” “the anti-auteur work of all time,” although he made the usual mistake of limiting the definition of “auteur” to directors. Feldman thought it would be a smashing idea for the film to have several different directors. Val Guest, Kenneth Hughes, John Huston, Joseph McGrath, and Robert Parrish all directed different segments of the movie, all working independently of each another. For his efforts, producer Feldman wanted to give Val Guest the credit of “Coordinating Director”. But Guest turned it down, instead settling for an “Additional Scenes By” credit. Feldman’s main star either quit or was fired (depending on the source) halfway through filming. James, Moneypenny, Mata and Coop manage to escape from their cell and fight their way back to the Casino Director's office where Sir James establishes Vesper is a double agent. The casino is then overrun by secret agents and a battle ensues. Eventually, Jimmy's atomic pill explodes, destroying Casino Royale along with everyone inside. The Oscar-winning writer was the first person whom Feldman recruited to produce a screenplay for the film. He created a number of complete drafts with various evolutions of the story incorporating different scenes and characters. All of his treatments were “straight” adaptations, far closer to the original source novel than the spoof which the final production became. Le Chiffre to fund Spectre. The racy plot elements opened up by this change of background include a chase scene through Hamburg's red light district that results in Bond escaping whilst disguised as a lesbian mud wrestler. Guest states that in the originally released versions of the film, a cardboard cutout of Sellers in the background was used for the final scenes.
