Heads-up Part 1: The Cards You Play

Being successful heads-up requires a refined poker skill set; your ability to make strong reads of players and situations is paramount. You're in the blinds every hand. If you buy-in for $200 for a $1/$2 heads-up match and fold every hand, you will lose half your stack in just 66 hands. I like to re-raise on occasion preflop, and to call the majority of the flop bets to see if my opponent will bet again on the turn and river. For example, when you have middle pair on the river you should bet because it is likely you're ahead and will get called by third pair or worse. As you pick up common plays and tendencies of your opponent, you need to make adjustments to counter their most used moves. When you battle your opponent down to a small stack, you have to finish him/her off and not let him/her back into the match. This is a big mistake, and will almost surely leave you broke. I recommend never playing with more than 1/10th of your entire bankroll if you're a casual player, or more than 1/50th of your stack if you're a professional or serious player. Wether you’re the last two standing in a tournament or you’re simply playing a heads up cash game you must know the proper strategy. Don’t bluff off your whole stack and by any means don’t be afraid to lay a pot down.  Bluffing is important but knowing when to lay it down is even more essential. Since there are only two players in each hand, the likelihood that your opponent has anything worth betting is very low. Make a lot of bets on the flop to steal pots, and you will pad your stack. Then, when your opponent finally makes a stand, he/she will have too few chips to really put a dent in your stack. Some heads up players like to talk a lot of trash to get in their opponent's head, and this is a tactic that can work really well against a player who lacks self control. You'll improve at a much faster rate networking with other heads up players than if you were to not network at all.I think it's a good idea for most players to put as much time and energy into studying as they do into playing - at least in the beginning. My reasoning for this is that I feel playing poker is more or less "practice" while studying is where you catch all of your leaks. And I wouldn't play more than 2 tables until you're close to the highest stakes you want to play. I'd rather focus on playing well and moving up than trying to increase my hourly. I suggest doing this is that I feel that it may be easier for many players to tilt at heads up poker in comparison to any other variation of poker out there. However, if you use the tips above, put your head down and just work at it, you'll find that your efforts quickly pay off and that the work you need to do as you improve lessens. This also works the other way: play your A-game until you finish off your opponent. If you think you’ve won and end up losing, you will never forgive yourself.
