World Series of Poker 2008: Battle for the Bracelets (Sony PlayStation 3, 2007)

world series of poker ps3 review

Description

Arguably the best poker game on the market these days. The enhanced AI and depth of the career mode make the game more than just poker. Poker games, this would be an excellent tool to learn, and a way to not lose money through playing with a bunch of buddies for real money. Ferguson like they were in last year's game. Instead, you join the tour along one of three difficulty levels: amateur, semi-professional or professionally ranked player, which determines the number of events that you can enter and your starting bankroll. Player of the Year points by performing well in tournaments to end your season with the overall Player of the Year award. On open days, or those moments when you end your tournament run a bit early, you'll sometimes receive phone calls from fellow gamblers inviting you to cash only events at different hotels. This will give you another chance to increase your bank roll and points totals, with a much further reduced number of opponents. As you play, you'll earn different awards, such as collector chips for earning different hands or defeating tour pros, which you can wager online against opponents or rivals. Defeating someone like Annie Duke or Mike Matusow over a series of tournaments isn't going to make them antagonistic towards you, or talk extra smack to you whenever you get to the table. Omaha, Razz, Seven Card Stud and of course, Texas Hold 'Em, as well as extensive tutorials and tutorial options for beginners. No Limit Hold 'Em against specific pros, create their own custom games and tournaments, or enter a speed game with continually increasing blinds and limits, as well as a clock that limits the amount of time you have to weigh decisions at the table. It also features video poker and blackjack, which is an interesting diversion, but feel like an afterthought compared to the other game modes. As you play more hands, you'll unlock tools that can be used through every round of poker. For the most part, novices will probably rely upon the pot odds tool, which continually gives you an update on how weak or strong your hand is across your initial deal, as well as the flop, turn and river. While this doesn't particularly help you as far as tells or getting a sense of what your opponents have in their hand, it gives an additional television styled presentation to the action at the tables. This is evident with the large amount of video that's scattered throughout the title, including the introductions of tournaments at Las Vegas casinos and poker tutorials. Computer AI is still as solid this year around, and the inclusion of Player of the Year points for the career mode and redone presentation, coupled with online rivals makes this game one of the best poker games out there. Las Vegas including Caesar's Palace, Flamingo, and Bally's as well as Harrah's New Orleans and the Grand Tunica in Mississippi. As gamers win rounds they also unlock goodies that can help improve their skills in the poker arena. World Series of Poker 2008: Battle for the Bracelets, players challenge over 30 of the world’s top poker champions. A-list pros such as Johnny Chan, Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, and Mike "The Mouth" Matusow on the quest to win the championship bracelet for the $10,000 Main Event and over $60MM in total prize money. Psychology is for the mentally ill, and since gambling imaginary money means the stakes are zero, the game falls down like the house of cards you would have had more fun building if only you had bought a deck instead of the digital equivalent. Sadly, that isn't the case here. All computer-controlled characters, be they professional or merely seat-filler, are set as either aggressive or defensive players. Once you determine how the other folks at the table are playing, it's fairly easy to develop the strategies necessary to win. Most times, if you commit to super-aggressive play, you can outlast all but the most committed AI characters. For the most part, players look as if they have plastic skin, and every time I saw the announcers introducing a tournament, I couldn't help but wonder if McEachern had contracted some form of leprosy. The actual characters aren't much better, with a highly limited repertoire of animations and expressions. It didn't matter if it was $30 or $3,000 —apparently you just plunk down chips and tell the dealer how much you're betting afterwards. You can pick your player’s clothes, hat, and sunglasses and even their voice. Each poker event comes with “Player of the Year” points depending on how you finish. It is these points that add up to see who is the world’s best poker player for that year. Also, there are special chips to collect during each event. There are specific pros that, when beaten, award you a chip to commemorate their defeat. You can also unlock tools like “Pot Odds” and “Opponents.” These help you to understand your playing and the playing of your opponents. You also have the option of playing “Beat the Brat.” This is where you play a heads-up game against different pros as you battle your way up the ladder towards Phil Hellmuth. Another new addition is your cell phone. After being defeated in a tournament and down on your luck, or ruling the poker world, you will get phone calls from different pros inviting you to play in cash games at famous hotels. WSOP event, you’ll notice how easy the controls are. Despite the fact that it is a poker game, and there aren’t that many actions to choose from, the game is still easily controlled with the left thumb stick and the “A” button. I was pleased at the realism of the player movements and voice-overs. However there are a few details about the visual effects that need some attention. First off, just like last year, when a player is betting chips, there is a randomization of motions for him or her to go through. On the opposite end, a call of $80 might involve the player taking a stack of chips and counting out seven, eight, or nine chips.
