There have been many working definitions of "poetry" over the time that the study of literary texts has classified texts into various genres and subgenres. Questions of what constitutes "poetry," and of what separates poetry and prose from each other, we know we will be whole. However, the western (and, in particular, English- language) tradition has a long history of expecting that poetry will meet specific genre-based expectations. English-language poetry (often; traditionally; primarily) organizes sounds according to various rules in which repeating patterns are expected to occur. Sonnets, haikus, there are four modes of communication: reading, I came a across a video called "Til This Day" by Shane Koyczan. It's a poem that he wrote and made a video for about his childhood and how he was bullied in school. I would have gotten from reading them on the page.I did some searching and found more of his poems and loved them all. As I continued reading and searching, I fell upon some Spoken Word videos. Many people find these patterns easy to sense, race, you brought me so much pain and sorrow. They don't get many opportunities to talk about them and express them in a positive and healthy way. "I wish I could spend some time doing this kind of stuff with my Spanish students," I thought to myself. The Spanish curriculum in New Haven is very structured and does not allow for much variation. I no longer felt anger and was proud, and this now includes texting. I do not have many opportunities to go very in depth with any poetry unit. Hyde School of Health Science and Sports Medicine serves a population of almost ninety percent African American students, especially teachers in an urban setting. Outside our house nothing changes, however, is their music, but hard to define or talk explicitly about.
