Miami Dice, Episode 149 - Runewars

runewars review dice tower

Description

I enjoy Conquest of Nerath, but I'm looking for something a bit heavier and with a more flexible player count. I didn't care for the battle resolution. I know some people hate dice, but I'd much rather just chuck dice than flip cards and match symbols. For someone who's designed Viticulture and Euphoria, Scythe has the strong potential to be very well designed. I was lucky enough to get to review it, and I really enjoyed it personally. LOTS of cool moving pieces, I think the biggest problem with the game is going to be teaching it to new people, just because theirs so many moving parts. KS. That they don't resort to emotionally-manipulative gimmicks shows that they have faith in the product.I think everyone here summed up pretty well all the various things that contributed to the hype of this game, or any other game for that matter. For me personally, my backing of the project was mostly superficial. My heritage is Polish, well half of it at least, and I just have a soft spot for most things Polish. The artwork is amazing and the alternate history appeals to my love of both sci-fi and history. Sometimes that is a new game with new mechanisms and possibilities. Others its discovering a new strategy within a game that you've already played a dozen times. If someone else is having fun, then they are doing it right. Denigrating one style of experience is bad for the hobby as a whole. If you don't dig on something, then that's cool. But there is no need to rain on someone else's parade. Force, Command, and Rogue, and the choice of a players team, will focus their strategy. Players will each bring a Battlefield card to the game, and before the first turn will roll to determine who’s Battlefield the duel will take place. Their resources, fleets, and recruitment all dwindle in comparison to the might of the Imperial military machine. Star Wars: Rebels TV show, this character adds to the dark side a formidable force user as well.  He is tough with a high health, high speed, strong attack dice, and the ability to throw his lightsaber for a ranged attack. Lando Calrissian has made his living on the fringes of civilization. He’s been a smuggler and a gambler, trusting his fortunes to Lady Luck—and somehow coming out ahead time and again. Most recently, his victory in a card game won him control of Cloud City itself: a luxurious resort and tibanna gas mining facility. RW and saw the review, I'm curious about your reactions, especially his criticism of battles being tedious and the heroes not adding much to the game. I emailed Tom asking if he thought Banners of War fixed any of his concerns. Runewars and really enjoy it. It has an epic feel that I like. I like the battle approach as well; it's unique but works fine. I agree that the hero's feel a bit disconnected but that was never a deal breaker. They are still important to achieving victory (getting rune stones).I haven't seen the review, but I think his conclusions are misguided. If battles are tedious, it's because players aren't paying attention. I don't find any of it to be fiddly.I usually agree with their reviews, but they were way off on this one. It's an all around incredible game. Love the combat, love the fate cards, love the heroes. I was surprised to hear Tom and Sam not take to it. I find it a simple but engaging game, and the expansion is worth getting, not to fix any issues, but just to add more heroes, cards, and units to the factions.
