As we have stated, seven-card stud is an intricate game, and determining the best possible play in a given situation involves numerous factors. Consequently, you should play hands that have a good chance to improve. Although these are good starting hands, they have no immediate value. Moreover, you will not complete your flush or straight very often. This is sometimes true even when you are sure you don’t have the best hand. Of course, if your hand becomes hopeless, you should discard it. But in many situations, you will have enough ways to win that chasing is worthwhile. Three of a kind, also referred to as rolled-up trips; big pairs; small and medium pairs; and the drawing hands. Still, you don’t want to be dealt three queens and win only the antes. The two most important considerations are the availability of the cards you need — that is, whether your hand is live — and the size of your kicker. However, be careful. If you get caught up in the action, you will begin to play too many hands. Texas Hold'em came along Stud poker was the go-to game in most card rooms. With 5-7 cards and a completely different structure than Holdem, Stud Poker strategy is a whole new (or old) ballgame. The fifth street card didn't make the hand any better because it didn't trip the 2's and it didn't suit the flush-draw. This player called or bet on a pair of two's with a very bad chance at a flush draw on late streets. Luckily the player caught a pair of 7's to couple with his pair of 2's. The river card was no help either. I stress that the hand should have been folded early, and folded in most cases except if you and your opponent are checking down to the river from fifth street. It would be nearly impossible to get the king hand to fold past fifth street. Not only is he in betting position, this fourth street hand is eligible for a double-bet. There is not enough money in the pot to make it worth continuing. In most cases, fold your hand. Fourth street in stud-hi is the only instance where a double-bet can be made. Some card rooms allow that once a double-bet has been made, a double-raise also becomes an option. Seven Card Stud strategy, the next step is to take your new knowledge to the table. More winning hands are decided by the highest pair of two pair or just the highest pair, than by straights, flushes and other big hands. In full Stud games (8 players), especially those played for small stakes, the way to win the pot is almost always going to be by making a strong hand. This is because almost all hands go to showdown in full, small-stakes games. Stud all depends on what position you're in. As we've established in the previous example, there are hands that might be an easy raise in one position and an easy fold in a different position. In early positions (one of the first couple of players to the left of the "bring-in"), all three of your cards matter. If it folds to you in later positions, your two down cards don't matter as much since a strong up card might be good enough to win the pot outright. However, if you're in a later position where a player has already completed the bring-in, all three of your cards matter.
