Table Construction

This section describes the process of building a complete HO scale raceway. Suggestions and construction tips found in other sections of this web site are incorporated here, along with photographs of each phase of the construction. The 8-position barrier terminal block mounted in the center of the cross brace is where track power will be applied to the table. The drivers stations for the center lanes, 2 and 3 are mounted on opposites sides and at opposite ends of the table. Acquiring the lumber, cutting it and constructing the table itself can be done on Saturday, and the primer coat applied late that afternoon. Racing is done in a counter clockwise direction. The long straight on the right side of the diagram feeds into the slow-speed hairpin section. A short chute follows and then it's into the carousel section before accelerating down the back straight. HO Slot Car layouts require a strong, sturdy table. This is especially true for landscaped layouts. The butt joint between the 4×4 and 4×8 foot plywood sheets requires a 2×4 frame cross brace. For a smoother and quieter running race track glue the optional sheets of soundboard (Homasote) to the top of the table. If your local lumber yard or building supply center does not carry this size of plywood check the Yellow Pages under Plywood for a supplier that does. In some area of the country 5 × 5 foot plywood sheets are available. Adjustable feet can be added to level the table surface. Threaded leveling feet can be purchased at most hardware stores or building supply centers. Measure each diagonal as shown to ensure the table frame is square. Place one corner of the "long" diagonal against a secure object (a lolly column in the picture). Now push on the opposite corner of the "long" diagonal. Measure both diagonals again - continue in this fashion until both diagonals are the same length. The legs should be attached roughly 6" inside the side rails. A single 3/8" x 6" carriage bolt with washers is used for each leg. Use a "square" (builder's or carpenter's) to square each leg to the table top frame before tightening up the carriage bolts. This track is mounted on a twenty-foot trailer with an aluminum and vinyl top. Fluorescent lights are mounted under the vinyl top. This track can easily be pulled with a tow truck. It only takes two people about 15 minutes to set up. The track is 50+ feet of four-lane racing. The cars are 1/24 scale and run on 12V DC. All is controlled by a computer that keeps # of laps, times, MPH, best lap, etc all displayed on a color monitor. There are many options in the computer program, allowing for all types of racing. The four lanes are colored coordinated with the control boxes. We have 10 Nascar type cars and 6 controllers, lots of spare parts, motors, tools, track tack, etc. This track runs on 120V 10 Amps and can easily be run by a small generator for remote cases. An aluminum toolbox is mounted on the tongue of the trailer that houses the computer and a 12V converter with a light and plenty of room for storage of car, track treatment or whatever. There is also plenty of room under the racing surface for storage. Trackmate PS-3010 DC Regulated power supply. Adjustable rom 0-30 volts with a maximum output of 10 amps. This unit features large, easy to read voltage and amperage gauges. Custom built Race Directors Control includes a 6062 Altronix multi-purpose timer. This unit can be set to allow you to adjust heat races from 1 second up to 1 hour. There is also a practice mode that allows constant useage. HTR+ is the sequel of HTR High Tech Racing that was downloaded several million times across all platform HTR+ offers 3 different difficulty levels and 20 tracks that include several challenges like loops, jumps, crossroads, narrows and high speed curves. They finally added it. XBox 360 Controller Support has been added and the game has become so much more playable. The only negative to the game is that you use the mouse to adjust the throttle (by clicking and dragging a notch on a powerbar). It works but the trigger of a controller would be much more natural and there is no option for it unfortunately. If you buy the best wires, then the best chassis, you'll be able to win easy and normal mode always at full speed. No need to play with the throttle. And in hard mode, it's almost unplayable because of the high speed and the camera. He who has the best tires and can maintain a higher average speed usually wins. The good news is that you never have to replace pins and runners. Eldon 1/24th scale back in the late 1960's. I had many Tyco's and Aurora sets of the decades and for a while had a Carrera 1/24th scale and loved.
