Description

The reaction of several league executives was part disgust, part resignation on Wednesday night. Christian mother who was so offended by the song Norf Norf by rapper Vince Staples playing on the radio that she broke down in tears has been making rounds on the internet, acquiring, as expected, a fair amount of mockery. Stanford as the paradise we want it to be. We go into our classes ready to learn, make new friends in our residences and student groups and revel in the social and academic opportunities that seem delivered into our waiting hands. Cavaliers winning the lottery this year was a meager 1.7 percent. Last year, when they surprisingly elected to take UNLV’s Anthony Bennett with the first pick, their probability of winning was 15.6 percent. CS 109, I can tell you that, assuming that the lottery each year is independent, the overall probability of winning in those three years given the above odds, is approximately .0074256 percent. But the sequence of events over the last few years is getting just a little bit outrageous. Vignesh Venkataraman gets drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Draft next month. NBA Draft Lottery. This probably isn’t the first time you’ve heard this… unless you’re completely oblivious and enable serious web browsing filters. One would assume the first pick would be a lock with a 25% of winning…nope. The New Orleans Hornets earned the first pick with a 13% chance. Interesting. The then league-owned Hornets lost their star player Chris Paul in 2011 to the Los Angeles Clippers through a highly scrutinized and high profile trade. But with a traded NBA Draft Lottery pick from the Los Angeles Clippers, the Cavs now had two opportunities at the no. 1 pick. And land it they did with the Clippers’ traded pick…that had a 2.8% chance of winning. Cavs had a 1.7% chance to win the first pick of the NBA Draft Lottery. 1.7%. The poor Philadelphia 76ers, who didn’t tank to have the worst 2013-2014 record in basketball (19-63), were awarded with the 3rd pick in the lottery. NBA parted with New Orleans, the top overall selection served as a sort of “parting gift”.  Like a gesture which shows the league wishes them well moving forward. There is so much drama in this lottery that you can’t help but to sit on the edge of your seat as the envelopes are opened. They would commission an internal report outlining the pros and cons of perpetrating a massive conspiracy on the public while also violating several tenets of fair practice in its relationships with the owners of the other 29 teams. Conversely, no one was complaining when the Chicago Bulls won the Derrick Rose sweepstakes with a 1.7 percent chance. In fact, the year when Patrick Ewing, fresh from Georgetown University was the first lottery pick for the New York Knicks using an envelope system, it caused outrage in the league. Fans who detested the Knicks felt that it smelt of foul play. Many accused David Stern and the NBA accountant of fixing that lottery draft to make sure that that the struggling team in the largest market got the best player added to their franchise. During Patrick Ewing’s lottery pick, the card pulled from the spinning glass bowl was subject to debate. NBA. The New Orleans Hornets were owned by the NBA in 2012. Tom Benson became the new owner for the team prior to the draft lottery. During the lottery draw, the team was able to land Anthony Davis as the no.1 pick for the franchise. Internet to voice their suspicion about the legitimacy of the draw, crying foul play and signifying that David Stern must have promised the team’s owner the first pick before he purchased the team. We probably won’t ever know the truth. In his case, conspiracy theorists suggest that Kevin Durant was handed to the Sonics behind Greg Oden, who turned out to be a huge bust. At that time, Seattle was trying to find an arena deal so that they could improve the attendance at basketball games. Portland got a handout in Greg Oden who was picked over Durant. Additionally, Portland’s fans had watched how their team had missed the NBA playoffs for four consecutive years, the longest deficiency experienced by the franchise. Chicago Bulls, many think that David Stern was more interested in creating the next big thing – a rivalry like the Lakers and Celtics of the previous decade. The rational population might scoff at this, but according to the conspiracy truth-seekers, they don’t believe in this being a coincidence. I mean, the NBA couldn’t even make it more obvious that the fix was in. Not only did they give the Cavs the top pick, they even tried to cover up the fix by giving Milwaukee and Philadelphia the second and third picks. They have representatives from each team in the back room who oversee the ping pong balls being picked. I have a hard time believing that the NBA is trying to pull a fast one on a bunch of savvy billionaires. They tanked, but they did it the right way. They lost all those games because they weren’t good enough. Jeff Green isn’t a real NBA star. And in the final minutes of games you need a closer, and the Celtics don’t have one. Brad Stevens got this team, which had nothing to play for, to play with heart and determination. Clippers won the top pick… they were just dumb and traded it for Baron Davis’ expiring deal. The Cavs have won two years in a row, and last year their odds were the 3rd best. The worst team’s odds are just 25%. Quit crying. The NBA is not rigging anything for freaking Cleveland. The league doesn’t care about making Cleveland feel better for losing LeBron, the league wants money like any other company. Hornets were allowed to all but tank several games of their games, thereby landing the team tied with Cleveland for the league’s third poorest record and securing more ping pong for themselves in this week’s mockery of a lottery drawing.
