Just months after winning a giant account from Safety Harbor Spa & Fitness Center in Tampa and a $500,000 account from the Bahamas` largest coporation, President Philip Schwartz announced April 12 it had landed the Resorts International account. The switch means a new approach to tourism at properties that both compete with South Florida and attract area residents. The biggest change is under way at the Paradise Island resort, which was sold in May by entertainment mogul Merv Griffin to Sun International, a South African resort operator. At the Crystal Palace, new owner Phil Ruffin, a Wichita businessman, is just settling into the 857-room resort. Nassau's north shore lies paradise, with a sweeping tropical beach edged by a luxurious grove of casuarina trees. Paradise Island Resort and Casino, renamed Atlantis, Paradise Island, is scheduled to open fully on Dec. 22. The resort has been partly closed since last May when its $125 million refurbishment began. The property will include a 14-acre water park with a 3-million-gallon saltwater outdoor aquarium stocked with 100 species of fish, including sharks, rays and barracuda. The hotel's 1,150 rooms and casino have been redone, and two new restaurants have been built, for a total of 12; one of the restaurants will be entered via a 100-foot-long clear tunnel through the aquarium. Double rooms will be $130 to $325 a night, depending on date and location. Paradise Paradise, which has continued in operation since the change of ownership, is to be closed and renovated, probably next year. Double rooms are currently $85 to $135 a night. Guests at any of the resorts can use the amenities of all three, including the 18-hole oceanfront golf course on the eastern side of the island.
