Little Wild Horse Canyon/Bell Canyon loop hike is the most popular hike in the San Rafael Swell for good reason. The canyons are two of the best slot canyons in Utah. This hike is suitable for just about everyone. Just follow the canyon downstream and you will find yourself back at the trailhead. Wild Horse Bell Canyon Trail is a 8 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Hanksville, UT and is rated as moderate. Started around 8:00 in the morning, weather was perfect until we got to the top of Little Wild Horse canyon. That is when the sun hits you and for the remainder of the hike you are in the sun. Took us 4 hours to complete, and that is with an inexperienced hiker. The first 1/2 mile was brutal but once we entered the slot canyon it was even relatively cool. The slot canyon was great and unique. It was nice because you could drive from Moab, hike the trail, and make it back to town all in a reasonable time. The scenery was outstanding. Another branch joins from the left then the way ahead remains open for at least a mile, as the wash meanders along while the crumbling cliffs at either side gain height gradually. Wading through these potholes can generally be avoided by straddling the rocks above. This part of the canyon is deep yet still quite open but later the rocks become more curvy and the cliffs above overhang - the passageway from here onwards is darker and more mysterious, and sometimes just 3 feet across. In several places the floor drops by a few feet but there are no difficult obstacles. Valley State Park is inhabited by strange and unique rock sculptures, carved by wind and water, that suggest mischievous goblins and phantasmagoric creatures. These pinnacles are composed of large, orange-brown boulders of hard rock atop weaker sandy layers which have eroded more quickly. Chaffin returned to the area he called Mushroom Valley. He spent several days exploring the mysterious valley and photographing its scores of intricately eroded creatures. Publicity attracted visitors to the valley despite its remoteness. In 1954, it was proposed that Goblin Valley be protected from vandalism. The campsites are divided into ten walk-in tent pads, fourteen RV spaces, and one group site able to accommodate up to 35 people. Showers and flush toilets, as well as a communal water and dump station are all available free of charge. San Rafael Reef. A popular hiking route loop starts in Little Wild Horse Canyon and returns to the Little Wild Horse Canyon Trailhead via Bell Canyon. The hike requires some scrambling over large boulders and squeezing through narrow spots. Do not attempt this hike if there is a possibility of flash flooding. The trailhead, with its bulletin board, parking area and toilet is 5.3 miles south of the Goblin Valley entrance station. The dirt road south of Goblin Valley is rough, sandy, and subject to washouts. Valley State Park is located in Emery County between the towns of Green River and Hanksville, UT. Wind and water have carved fantastic and unique goblin-like sculptures out of rock, creating an outdoor playground that inspires the imagination. Wild Horse Canyon/ Bell Canyon loop hike is the most popular hike in the San Rafael Swell for good reason. The canyons are two of the best slot canyons in Utah. This Little Wild Horse Canyon/ Bell Canyon loop hike is suitable for just about everyone. Utah is famous for so many scenic wonders, and among the most beautiful and fascinating of them all are its slot canyons, narrow and twisting corridors whose walls bear almost unbelievable erosion-caused shapes and patterns. Those who have the proper equipment or tolerance for such conditions must find solitude and rewards few of the rest of us can even imagine. San Rafael Swell, hikers ascend about 700 feet. When I hiked the canyons two days after a good rain, I encountered several pools of water, but none of them reached my knees. A trekking pole might be useful to test the depth of a pool before you step into it, but no other special equipment is necessary. A dry waterfall blocks direct passage at one point, but adventurous people can scramble up it (a short Class 4 pitch), and others can use sandstone ramps on either side of this spot. Most people seem to prefer the ramp on the right. I completely missed the sign on the way up, and it is easy to miss for a few reasons. First, the sign is hard to see as one approaches it because brush partially blocks the natural line of sight to it. Second, the left fork (Bell) is wider and looks like the obvious choice. SUV, but about 6 miles in, right after the spur to the Chute Canyon TH, there is a section that looks washed out and is in fact recommended only for modified 4WD vehicles. A quick look at the road will confirm why. So, unless you want to destroy your vehicle or have a modified 4-wheeler, you can forget this option. Travel is level in the confining canyons, alternating through straight lines and quick, shifting turns. Little Wild Horse's longest and most intricately carved section. Goblin Valley. Drive 5.3 miles west to Temple Mt Junction. Turn left and drive 11.5 miles to Little Wild Horse Canyon Road, just before the Goblin Valley Visitor Center. Turn right and drive 5.35 miles to the trailhead on the right. You never know quite what you will get until you bite in and round each tight twist. Utah is not much more than tens of thousands of interconnected canyons criss-crossing the landscape like cracks in a shattered windshield. In about a half mile, the canyon walls push in from both sides and a low wall of sandstone blocks the route. You'll find a couple ways over the obstacle, and the kids will definitely need some help. If you find this difficult, be cheered in the knowledge that the wall is the hardest part in the entire canyon. Within a couple hundred yards, the drainage splits. Go right into Little Wild Horse, the smaller of the two canyons.
